The American Camp Chair is an updated version of a classic… the Fenby or Tripolina campaign/safari chair.  Developed by an English civil engineer and inventor,  Joseph Beverly Fenby, in 1855 and patented in 1877, the Fenby design is widely admired for it’s comfort, elegance, strength, compact stowed size, and its light weight. This design has been proven on military campaigns, expeditions, safaris, and outings worldwide. Notable users include President Theodore Roosevelt, Thomas A. Edison, Aldo Leopold, noted wildlife biologist, and thousands of adventurers world-wide.

Handmade in the USA using modern methods and materials to produce a chair faithful to its heritage, but superior in performance. For chair frame strength and light weight we utilize clear, vertical grain Port Orford cedar harvested in Oregon under Forest Stewardship Council guidelines.  The metal fittings are laser cut stainless steel, media tumbled to remove any sharp edges and produce a pleasing, non-reflective finish. Fasteners are 1/4” stainless steel rivets. Stays are 1/16” stainless steel cable. The only plastic parts in our chair frames are the nylon washers used to assure firm, smooth operation of the frame. Seat slings are sewn from proven, old school, heavy no. 8 canvas duck. All seams are reinforced with nylon webbing and double stitched..

It is provided with a heavy duty, water resistant ballistic nylon carry bag with military style clip closure and a substantial, adjustable carry sling.

Care of your chair

Your chair is durable, but both frame and sling will benefit from storage in it’s carrying bag. The chair sling may be hand-cleaned, or machine washed with mild detergent and cold water. Hang to dry to minimize shrinkage.

The wooden frame is finished with a stain/sealer — Cabot’s Clear Solution, Heartwood 3004. The finish may be renewed as needed by applying this finish with a soft cloth, then wiping dry. Nothing more is required. The wooden parts are finished with a stain/sealer — Cabot’s Clear Solution, Heartwood 3004.
